ABSTRACT

The authors present the results of a technological, use-wear and residues analysis carried out on Cyrprinidae pharyngeal teeth and ornaments recovered in two Late Mesolithic Burials (H2 and H297) at the site of  Vlasac in the Danube Gorges in the Central Balkans, Serbia. The site, firstly excavated in 1970-1971, has recently been investigated in 2006-2009, yielding 17 new burials. Owing to the meticulous excavation carried out during these recent excavations at the site, the position of ornaments found in burials have precisely been record. A good preservation of organic materials at the site allowed the identification of numerous micro-residues related to the use of these ornaments. A reconstruction of the body costumes at the site of Vlasac during the Late Mesolithic is proposed on the basis of the integration of contextual, technological, use-wear and micro-residues data.
